We are back home after a super long stay in India and we feel great. I do miss my family back home but the excitement of being back and being able to get back to serious work helps. For now at least. While in India, I wanted to make hummus for my brother but it is kind of hard to find hummus there. If you do find it and I was able to in one store but it was priced at a whooping 25$ for a small bottle. That’s too much for satisfying hummus cravings, don’t you think so?
But I was adamant to make it for him and finally after doing some research, I realized that it is not that hard to make homemade tahini. I know you might be thinking why go thru the pain of making tahini and why not just add sesame seeds ? I swear I thought about it but I wasn’t satisfied with the results and I wanted to make the real deal for my bro. I was surprised by the results. It takes literally 5 mins and just two ingredients to have fresh homemade tahini. I really like it because every time I used to buy tahini in US, the big bottle would sometimes last almost a year and I was always scared of it going bad.
I am starting a new series called ‘How to’ and in that once every week, I will be posting either a super simple recipe such as making a super easy vegetable stock or homemade tahini or proper technique of cooking quinoa (coming up next) and so on to make life easier for cooks and it will give you confidence that you no longer need to depend on salty super market stocks or need to spend a chunk of your money on a huge bottle of tahini.
I made this tahini just before making a big batch of hummus which I froze for him but you always make it in advance and store in an airtight jar in refrigerator. It can be used to last minute hummus, salads, as a dip and so on.
- ½ cup sesame seeds, toasted
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- In a blender, add sesame seeds and olive oil and blend it until smooth paste forms. Add more oil if you desire thinner consistency.
